Netflix has added another major name to the cast of its forthcoming limited series Enigma Variations, with Alicia Vikander joining Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the adaptation of André Aciman’s acclaimed novel. The announcement brings together two internationally recognised actors for one of the streamer’s most closely watched literary projects.

Vikander will play Claire, a pivotal figure in the life of Paul, the central character played by Taylor-Johnson. The series follows Paul across several defining years as his romantic relationships shape his understanding of identity, desire and intimacy. Adapted from Aciman’s 2017 novel, the drama explores love across both heterosexual and same-sex relationships, continuing the author’s exploration of memory and emotional longing that first reached a global audience through Call Me by Your Name.
The project is being written and executive produced by Amanda Kate Shuman, whose previous credits include The Wheel of Time. Acclaimed South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus will direct and also serves as an executive producer. Media Res, the company behind prestige television dramas including The Morning Show and Pachinko, is producing the limited series alongside Aciman and Monica Levinson.
Vikander’s casting marks another significant television role for the Academy Award winner, whose recent work has balanced international independent cinema with larger studio productions. She won the Oscar for The Danish Girl and has since led projects including Firebrand, in which she portrayed Katherine Parr opposite Jude Law’s Henry VIII, and the historical drama The Assessment. Her move into a major Netflix literary adaptation reflects the continued migration of established film actors towards prestige limited series.
For Taylor-Johnson, Enigma Variations extends a notably busy period. The actor has recently appeared in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later and continues to alternate between commercial franchises and auteur-led projects. He was announced as the lead of Enigma Variations earlier this year after Jeremy Allen White exited the production during development.
The adaptation has attracted attention partly because it reunites Netflix with another novel by Aciman, whose Call Me by Your Name became one of the defining literary screen adaptations of the past decade. While Enigma Variations is a separate story with different characters, it revisits many of the themes that made Aciman’s work so influential, including fluid sexuality, longing and the lasting imprint of formative relationships.
Production is scheduled to begin this summer, with filming expected to take place in New Jersey and Italy before a likely release in 2027.
